THE PRACTICAL ANSWER

Choose a website platform based on editing needs, integrations, maintenance capacity and the buyer journey. Framework choice alone does not determine enquiries or search rankings.

Choose for the team that will operate the website

Start with the people who publish content and the workflows the website must support. WordPress can suit an editorial team that wants a familiar CMS. A custom application can suit unusual user journeys, deeper integrations or shared product infrastructure. Both approaches need careful implementation and maintenance.

Compare the practical differences

DecisionWordPress approachCustom application approach
EditingCMS and plugin workflowEditing interface must be selected or built
IntegrationsAssess each plugin and its supportScope API integration and failure handling
MaintenanceCore, theme and plugin updatesApplication dependencies, hosting and data services
OwnershipDocument theme and plugin licencesDocument repository, deployment and CMS access

Evaluate the full engagement

Compare discovery, content migration, build, launch, recurring subscriptions, maintenance and likely future changes. A lower initial quote can leave important responsibilities outside the engagement. A more complex stack can also create unnecessary ongoing work when a simpler CMS would meet the need.

Ask for evidence

Review a representative mobile page, verify rendered content and metadata, and submit a real test enquiry. Check how your team publishes an article or changes a service description. Use those results to assess implementation quality.

WordPress documentation explains the CMS, while Next.js documentation describes its application framework. These describe capabilities; they do not prove a conversion advantage for your project.

Discuss your website requirements.

Use this guidance in context

Technical examples are starting points for a project review. Platform requirements change, and results depend on implementation and starting conditions. Refer to the linked documentation and test the actual workflow.
